PAST EVENT

Valerie Hill is our guest, Library Director and Professor of the Community Virtual Library speaking on research on virtual environments for education and virtual libraries.

Dr. Valerie Hill has spent over a decade utilizing virtual environments for learning across multiple virtual platforms. Her insights on the advantages and disadvantages of virtual reality and virtual world spaces offers us a unique view on the potential for VR in the future of education, but only when learning objectives are clear and best practices are understood. Intentional immersion in well designed environments can provide a sense of presence across distance that is "real" and offers real deep learning.

Valerie J. Hill, Ph.D. is Director of the Community Virtual Library and teaches part-time multi-media college courses. Her research centers on digital citizenship and information literacy through the exploration of changing landscapes for education and libraries in digital culture. She has written peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has presented at numerous conferences. Awards include Texas Computer Education Association Librarian of the Year Finalist in 2007, TWU Chancellor’s Research Scholar Award in 2009, Lewisville Independent School District (LISD) Librarian of the Year 2010, Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education (VWBPE) Thinkerer Award in 2018 and ISTE Virtual Environments Network Pioneer of the Year Award in 2019. Valerie serves on the Board of Directors for New Media Arts, Inc. and she leads the ACRL Virtual Worlds Interest Group affiliated with the American Library Association. She is also a National Writing Project Trainer with a passion for literacy in all formats. Her forthcoming book is Metamodernism and Changing Literacy: Emerging Research and Opportunities.
