Where VR Makes Sense for Health Professionals' Education

Janet Corral, Senior Director of Academic Innovation, [University of Colorado School of Medicine, Anschutz Medical Campus & Denver Campus

As health professions training programs consider learning and cost efficiency, the opportunity to consider VR in the continuum of simulation and clinical training experiences needs clarification. Janet Corral will place VR within the current continuum of training experiences, as well as the theory of expertise development (Ericsson, 2010), and walk through multiple case examples applicable across health professions training (e.g. PT, PA, MD, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, etc) and situate these within the continuum of simulation. Participants will be asked to engage with the case studies and provide their reflections on how VR can enhance HPE. The return on investment will be addressed, both from learner (e.g. learning efficiency, deliberate practice, etc) and administration perspectives (e.g. cost of education, cost of hardware/software support, etc). Participants will discuss the relative value of VR for achieving learning outcomes in health professions education.

Dr. Janet Corral is Director of Teaching Scholars Program for the Academy of Medical Educators at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Senior Director of Academic Innovation for the University of Colorado Office of Digital Education. Her research focuses developing trainees’ expertise in ill-structured domains, including the use of analytics and human factors approaches to bring about solutions in a systems context. She has won awards for curriculum design, simulation, and educational leadership. Currently, she is an executive board member of Best Evidence Medical Education, an international collaboration of the Association of Medical Education of Europe, and the member-at-large for the Western Group on Educational Affairs in the in the Association of American Medical Colleges.
