Calling All Angels: Designing and Analyzing XR Research

Heather Elizabeth Dodds, Independent Researcher

It is important to both craft and read research critically. XR, in industry and education, is still in its infancy. Research that shows that XR is better than other forms of learning is usually rife with cognitive and assessment deficiencies. Yet, VR devices sold out for consumers during the 2019 Christmas holiday season. As consumers and employers are fast climbing up on the XR bandwagon, there is intense back pressure to push XR into education. Educators face more pressures than ever to recommend devices, platforms, and uses for XR. How do we know what are the right decisions to make? How do we both critique research and encourage innovation that will lead us to our future choices?

Heather Elizabeth Dodds Ph.D. is a freelance Senior User Experience Research Consultant, selected as one of 54 US researchers to contribute to the State of XR project hosted by the Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN). She actively publishes about the use of XR via LinkedIn and Facebook. As an independent scholar, she independently analyzes research and technology free from corporate or institutional influence. Her 2013 dissertation is on the effects of virtual worlds (Second Life) on scientific inquiry skills. In her free time, Heather is also the creator of 80s Music Video Tuesday on Facebook and Twitter.

Immersive Technology and Healthcare: Barriers of Entry, Patient Experience, and Hygiene Demands

Amy Hedrick, Co-Founder/CEO, Cleanbox Technology

"Immersive technology in healthcare, such as virtual and augmented reality, is rapidly expanding in investment, use case and size. This includes patient focused applications such as trauma therapy, pain mitigation, dementia treatment and other life enhancing therapeutic programs. Amy Hedrick will discuss the growth in augmented reality and virtual reality in healthcare comes the need for healthcare providers to focus on their patients’ end experience, improve engagement and adherence to a treatment plan, and elevate the immersive industry as a whole. The same hardware will be increasingly used by greater numbers of people. With numerous touch points on the face, skin, and hair comes the increase in contagion possibility. How the user feels when wearing a head mounted device or other wearable is as critical to long term engagement, efficacy, and data collection as any other factor. By adopting a comprehensive strategy that addresses quality content, hygiene and safety, healthcare providers can improve patient outcomes.

Amy Hedrick is CEO and Co-Founder of CleanboxTechnology. As a thought leader providing insights into the immersive technology, she brings solutions and innovation in smart tech hygiene. Amy was Manager of Content and Digital Media for the think tank division of Li and Fung, a leading global consumer goods sourcing and manufacturing company based in Hong Kong. Her expertise includes conducting bespoke research and C-level reports within technology, retail, and cross-genre applications.
