Session: Social VR Health Care / Immersive Health Care / Emergency Medicine

2020 Educators in VR International Summit brings together educators, learners, researchers, and experts in VR, AR, and XR to share their their passion for integrating immersive technology in education.

First Presentation

Track: Medical and Science

Social VR for Health Care Simulations

Susan Toth-Cohen, Professor, Thomas Jefferson University

Susan Toth-Cohen will summarize current research on the use of virtual reality (VR) for simulations in health care and discuss strengths and limitations of work to date. The primary focus will be on the current status of simulation experiences for students in health and human services professions to prepare them for work as members of interprofessional teams who are equipped to handle the complex needs of patients in current healthcare and social service environments. Following this review, we will explore areas of potential development in VR to produce environments to foster quality immersive experiences for interprofessional education.

Susan Toth-Cohen has been creating educational experiences for students in social virtual worlds since 2007. Starting with a number of successful project based learning endeavors, she moved to a focus on student social learning/advocacy and now to virtual simulations for IPE. Presently she is exploring ways to expand IPE through both virtual worlds and virtual reality.

The Future of Immersive Learning in Health Care

Rob Theriault, Professor, Paramedic Programs, Georgian College

We are transitioning from the information age to the experiential age. XR will reshape the way health care providers learn. Nascent technologies are poised to teleport students from the classroom to new, immersive and interactive worlds. The question on the minds of most health educators is whether these experiences will be novel or truly transformative? In this session, Rob Theriault will discuss how XR will change experiential learning.

Rob Theriault M.E.T., BHSc., CCP(f) is professor of paramedicine at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario. A former Critical Care Flight Paramedic with Ontario’s air ambulance system, Rob has a Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) Degree in Paramedicine from Victoria in University in Melbourne, Australia and a Master of Educational Technology (M.E.T.) Degree from the University of British Columbia. Rob is a published author, researcher, blogger, Podcaster, XR enthusiast and speaks at conferences across Canada and internationally. He is also a recipient of the Ontario Colleges “Innovative Teaching with Technology Award” for his use of technology to enhance learning.

Third Presentation

Track: Medical and Science

Virtual Reality for Emergency Medicine Education and Training

Timothy Koboldt, Emergency Physician, Simulation Director, University of Missouri Columbia School of Medicine

Discussion and demonstration of how VR is currently being used to teach medical students and physicians in Emergency Medicine. This includes using game-based play to improve teamwork, using individual and group VR exercises to teach critical thinking, communication and team management in critically ill patient management.

Dr. Timothy Koboldt is a medical doctor and practicing emergency physician at the University of Missouri. He completed his specialty training in Emergency Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. In addition to treating patient in the ER, he serves as the Associate Residency Program Director and Simulation Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine. In this role he designs and implements the didactic and simulation curricula to teach medical students and train the next generation of Emergency Medicine Physicians. Dr. Koboldt's research involves the use of VR for medical education and physician training as well as using VR for clinical applications for patients in the ER.
