Mark Sage, Executive Director, Augmented Reality Enterprise Alliance (AREA)

Many analysts predict that the Enterprise sector will be the biggest growth area for Augmented Reality (AR), yet the ecosystem still finds itself in the trough of disillusionment according to Gartner’s hype cycle model. Find out what the AREA (Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance) is doing to grow and educate the ecosystem and what you can do to help!

Mark Sage is the Executive Director of the Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance (AREA). The AREA is a membership funded alliance, helping to accelerate the adoption of Augmented Reality (AR) through a comprehensive ecosystem. With a focus on creating value and ROI for its members, his goal is to develop a robust and active ecosystem for AR. His background includes a strong interest in mobile, AR, VR, and IoT and he is excited to work with enterprises, providers and research organizations to the benefit and growth of the AR within the enterprise.

VR Language Learning and Teaching

Michael McDonald, VR English Teacher, Gold Lotus

Covering the landscape of VR foreign language learning and teaching, from English to the most endangered languages and how immersive technology is starting to offer new ways in which one can learn or teach such languages. Michael McDonald will explore the research available to support our understanding of how best to apply this new technology to the language-learning classroom. He will share practical tips on how to make that first, or next, step in integrating virtual reality within the context of building a student's speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a foreign language.

Michael McDonald, TEFL-qualified English teacher from London and founder of the Gold Lotus project which supports students, schools and companies in the integration of virtual reality language-learning programs has long seen the benefits that immersive technology can have to improve the way people learn or teach foreign languages. He first started creating VR language-learning content thanks to the Google Cardboard. Since then he has built collaborations with University College London's Institute of Education and the University of Salento's VR lab in Italy to launch a research project into the effectiveness of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in real-time collaborative virtual environments, with the findings of this study due in summer 2020.
