Session: Lecture to Holodeck / Gangs
2020 Educators in VR International Summit brings together educators, learners, researchers, and experts in VR, AR, and XR to share their their passion for integrating immersive technology in education.
From Lecture Hall to Holodeck
Rolf Kruse, Professor for Digital Media and Design, Erfurt University of Applied Sciences Computer Science Department
As part of the "Immersive Learning Lab" project, Rolf Kruse and his team test current technologies and platforms, and discuss and create application scenarios in an interdisciplinary manner with other faculties from the fields of engineering, architecture, business administration and logistics. Kruse began studying teaching experiences in Second Life a decade ago, and now evaluates learning platforms in the virtual world on how to remove the boundaries of physical spaces and to offer great flexibility for motivational education. After a report on their activities and approaches, they will discuss these challenges to apply high technology, generate high quality media and take effective didactic measures.
Rolf Kruse is Professor for Digital Media and Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt, Germany since 2012. Originally an architect, he discovered VR in the early 1990s at the Fraunhofer Institute in Darmstadt helping to boot the first VR-Center. Since then he has a long experience in the ideation and implementation of interactive spatial media with innovative technologies. He uses the newest media technologies to transfer complex knowledge to empower people through projects including, city planning (at Art+Com, Berlin, 1994-1997), mixed reality serious games for tradeshows, mediatecture installations (with Invirt GmbH, 1997ff.) and the “Cybernarium Edutainment Center” (a Fraunhofer Spin-Off in Darmstadt 2002-2005).
Virtual Decisions: Personal Awareness about Gang Membership
Dr. Atif Mohammed Ghani, EdTech Producer and Researcher, Hyperactive Developments
Dr. Atif Mohammed Ghani will assess the impact of the Round Midnight VIRTUAL DECISIONS, an Innovate UK funded 8-minute gang membership, seated immersive experience and corresponding workshop. This presentation is the result of his observations of individuals as they watched the experience, engaged in the workshops, follow-up post-experience questionnaires, and a focus group discussion held 2 days after viewing the experience. The presentation will summarise the responses of these young learners to the experience but also try and ask the wider question of “How can we develop an affective immersive teaching plan (mobile cinema set-up, discussion topics and role-play and other activities) which will complement the targeted student learning and inform behavioural change?”
Dr. Atif Mohammed Ghani is an edtech and film producer at Hyperactive Developments. He has produced over 10 independent films and is currently creating virtual reality experiences for the Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) Education curriculum in the UK. Atif received his PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
