Social VR As Intellectual Salon: Venue, Content, & Workflow

Charles Webster, MD, President, EHR Workflow, Inc.

"Social virtual reality is ideal for the intellectual salon, "a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation." (Wiki) Unlike watching a "sage on a stage," salons rely on intimate, face-to-face interactivity and debate, exposing the audience to learning outside confines. Like a good dinner host, the best salon host sets a good table, attracts the right guests, provides a stimulating introduction, and gets out of the way. Other times the host needs to step in to gently force attendees out of their silent comfort zones. Our table is set in the social VR 3D world. Instead of PowerPoint, an entire world is created for attendees to inhabit, not just observe. Having created dozens of worlds for dozens of events for an AltspaceVR channel, Chuck Webster, MD, will share what works, doesn't work, and provide an orview on how to whip up a new world around a new topics weekly.

Dr. Chuck Webster has degrees in business, engineering, and medicine. Every other week, for the past two years, he's hosted meetups on the AltspaceVR channel, Health Systems Chat in Social VR discussing health and healthcare systems, subsystems, and supersystems, creating a custom world for each event. Topics are diverse and explore the blend of technology in healthcare, engineering, and medicine.
