Translating Training Requirements into Immersive Experience

Joe Millward, Innovation Manager, TAFE NSW

Joe Millward will take you on the journey the TAFE NSW Digital Lab took as they were tasked with developing 8 virtual reality prototype applications for various vocational curriculum in 5 months. Learn how the team distilled the teachers requests and requirements into an achievable project plans. Millward will share tips on identifying what works in virtual reality and a supporting validation framework to measure success.

Joe Millward is a professional technology and business strategist with direct experience with Government, Industrial, Medical, Film & Media and FMCG Companies. Joe's work with the Tafe NSW team is breathtaking regarding the scale at which is operates. He is directly involved in developing, among other things, immersive learning capabilities for half a million learners.

Learning and Living in the Metaverse

Kalila R., Project Lead, Project Athena

Social VR can allow us to be who we want to be, do what we want to do in worlds greater than our own, with others. In the metaverse, we can challenge ourselves in such ways that will inspire growth in us as individuals the likes of which we may never have otherwise seen. Kalila R. explores learning and living in the metaverse.

Kalila R is the Project Lead for Project Athena, an open-source decentralized metaverse platform.

Queering Virtual Reality: Playful Exploration of Gender and Sexual Marginalization

Dylan Paré, PhD Candidate, University of Calgary

Dylan Paré's work arises from the urgent need to attend to how LGBTQ antagonism is negatively affecting the learning and life outcomes for LGBTQ+ people, especially in K-16 education. Jon this discussion on investigating how innovations in technology, such as multiplayer, virtual reality (VR) environments and 3D art tools, can support the development of critical literacies of gender and sexuality that can help address LGBTQ+ marginalizations.

Dylan Paré is a PhD candidate in the Learning Sciences at the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary. They research and design for public engagement with complex systems, with a primary focus on gender and sexuality, using the affordances of digital media technologies to enable individual meaning-making and socioscientific exploration. Dylan’s individual and collaborative work has been exhibited at the National Music Centre of Canada, Beakerhead science and technology festival, TEDx Calgary, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and Spark Science Centre. They co-directed Creative Futures and Creative Futures 360º in 2018, were a Fleck Fellow of the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in 2019, and is an Oculus Launch Pad 2019 alumni.
