2020 Educators in VR International Summit brings together educators, learners, researchers, and experts in VR, AR, and XR to share their their passion for integrating immersive technology in education.

NASA Suits: The Gateway for Student XR Development

Angel Lim, Team Lead, Norco NASA SUITS

Norco NASA SUITS is a community college student team participating in NASA's annual augmented reality design challenge, in which academic teams are tasked with creating an AR user interface for astronauts during space exploration missions. Participation in the project also involves undergoing an educational outreach campaigns, in which teams share their experiences and promote STEM education/XR technology to special demographics such as K-12 students, underrepresented minorities, and VR developers who could contribute to educational causes. NASA SUITS helps students begin their careers in augmented or virtual technology. Not only are participating teams working with cutting-edge technologies to solve real use cases in XR, they are spreading their passion and knowledge to the future generation and introducing virtual and augmented reality accessibility to people that otherwise would not have had the chance to try it. Many participating students go on to obtain internships or positions at institutions such as NASA and Microsoft.

Angel Lim started her career in AR/VR development through the first ever NASA SUITS challenge, and was offered 3 NASA internships and awarded a fellowship within Oculus's Launchpad Program. Norco NASA SUITS is a student team participating in NASA's annual SUITS design challenge. They were tasked with creating an augmented reality user interface for astronauts and have been selected as one of 10 teams in the country to visit the Johnson Space Center in April to present their design.

VR Space Design Philosophy

Jeremy D. Nickel, Founder of EvolVR, EvolVR

Anyone with access to a pair of $200 goggles can host an event in VR now, and most platforms will even offer excellent world templates to host within. But teaching in VR can go far beyond the tools we have traditionally had access to. Jeremy Nickel has been designing VR spaces for education for several years, pushing developers to push the boundaries of the immersive experience. You can each in worlds and ways you've never imagined before. Teaching biology? Be in the body as you do it. Teaching astronomy? Let's head to the stars. Pulling this off right is harder than you think. Nickel will walk you through the questions you should be asking yourself to guide the building of that purpose built world, and if time allows, he'll take you on a short field trip at the end of the event.

Jeremy D. Nickel thrives at the intersection of spirituality and technology. Ordained by the Unitarian Universalist Association and served seven years as the Spiritual leader of Mission Peak UU Congregation, an interfaith spiritual community in Fremont, CA. He left in 2017 to launch EvolVR. EvolVR is a secular/spiritual community that is creating personal growth experiences in Virtual and Augmented Reality.
