Professor Tom Furness is the founder of the Virtual World Society and a pioneer in human interface technology, widely known as the grandfather of virtual reality. Join us to learn more about Virtual World Society and the ground-breaking work they are doing with VR/AR/XR around the world through innovative programs like the Make a Wish program for VR Wishes for kids, scholarship programs, outreach programs, VR school programs and lab development, training, best practices and standards, educational VR/AR app development, and so much more.

Tom Furness is the founder of the Human Interface Technology Lab (HIT Lab) at the University of Washington, founder of the Virtual World Society, and founder and international director of the HIT Lab NZ at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ and the HIT Lab Australia at the University of Tasmania, Launceston, Tasmania.

Over a career spanning 53 years, Prof. Furness has been exploring and developing technologies for getting bandwidth between humans and computing machines. His work has encompassed fighter cockpits, virtual reality, retinal displays, educational tools, medical simulators, pain, phobias, molecular modeling, scanning fiber endoscopes and entertainment systems. This quest has been punctuated with side trips and ‘aha’ experiences that have led to unanticipated destinations. His work with Virtual World Society is changing the lives of educators and students around the world.
